Profronde Almelo 2011 / 26 August / Almelo

Samuel Sánchez (EUS), who was at the Profronde Almelo last year, returned in 2011 to show his polkadot jersey. Some of the other riders that were present at the criterium were Johnny Hoogerland, Rob Ruijgh, Lieuwe Westra, Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil-DCM), André Greipel, Marcel Sieberg (Omega Pharma – Lotto), Thomas Dekker, Raymond Kreder (Chipotle Development Team) and Reinier Honig (Landbouwkrediet).

Maarten Tjallingii, who worked hard for his team in the Tour de France, was there too. This year he became third in Paris-Roubaix. Other riders from Team Rabobank were Bram Tankink and Coen Vermeltfoort.

The peloton just after the official start. After 100 kilometres through the centre of Almelo, Rob Ruijgh (VCD) became the winner at the end of the night.

It is always hard for us to make good and clear photos at a criterium like the Profronde Almelo, because it is dark right from the start. It does create some amazing effects, like in the photo above when you see the peloton at top speed. For more info on cycling criteriums go here or to www.profrondealmelo.nl

Dutch Road Championships 2011 / 26 June / Elite Men

This year the Dutch championships took place in Ootmarsum. Marianne Vos from Nederland Bloeit already won the women’s race on Saturday and Ramon Sinkeldam from Rabobank CT the race for riders under 23. On Sunday it was time for the elite men to chase after the red-white-blue jersey.

There was a head bunch from almost the beginning of the race and this group got bigger after a few rounds on the local circuit. The bunch included quite a few riders from Team Rabobank, like Robert Gesink, Theo Bos and Steven Kruijswijk. However, after Robert Gesink had attacked after a while, lots of riders had to drop the head bunch and Gesink himself decided to leave the race because he did not feel well. Then others got away and sprinted for the victory.

The most discussed moment of the day: the attack of Pieter Weening (RAB) and Joost van Leijen (VCD). Team Rabobank did not allow Pieter Weening to ride up front, so Vacansoleil-DCM decided that Joost van Leijen could not go on either or he would be ‘giving away’ the championship.

Pim Ligthart (VCD) became the new Dutch champion at the end of the day. Bram Tankink (RAB) got second and Reinier Honig (LAN) third.
