The Giro d’Italia started in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands this year with an individual time trial of 9,8 kilometres. It was a very sunny day and about 75.000 cycling fans came to the time trial to cheer on their favourite riders. Simon Clarke will ride his first Giro for his new team, Cannondale.
A lot of the riders listen to their favourite music during their warm up. This includes Riccardo Stacchiotti from Nippo – Vini Fantini.
Vincenzo Nibali (AST) is the winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2013. His biggest rivals this year are Mikel Landa (SKY) and Alejandro Valverde (MOV). Last year’s winner Alberto Contador (TNK) isn’t participating this time.
Dutch cyclist Tom Dumoulin was the winner at the end of the day, Primož Roglič (TLJ) the number two and Andrey Amador (MOV) the number three. Dumoulin finished the time trial in 11 minutes and 3 seconds, whereas Roglič was only a fragment slower and Amador was six seconds slower. Tobias Ludvigsson (TGA) became fourth and got to wear the white jersey for best young rider.
