Dear Geraint

14 March 2016

Dear Geraint,

Congratulations on winning Paris-Nice. Great-Britain can be proud of another Englishman. You do know that this victory is very special in the history of cycling in the United Kingdom? The list of winners from Great-Britain is not that long. There are only two other riders on that list. Sir Bradley Wiggins and Tom Simpson. Wiggins won the race in 2012, the same year in which he managed to win the Tour de France. Tom Simpson did it almost fifty years ago, in 1967. It was just a couple of months before he died.

Geraint Thomas. Winner of Paris-Nice, 2016. Who would have thought? You were always the helping hand for someone else in your team. You were always looking after someone else. Whether it was Wiggins, or Porte, or Froome. They knew that they could count on you. This year the roles were different. This year you were the leader of the team. The leader to look after.

When was the first time that you knew you could win races like this one? Was it in 2014 at the Eneco Tour? A sixth place overall is not bad at all. Or was it last year in the Tour de Suisse? You became second there in the general classification. The best of the rest. Still, it is even better to be the best.

They tried. They tried to beat you in the last stage. Alberto Contador and Richie Porte even worked together to get you out of that yellow jersey. Do they even know that you are the kind of guy that does not give up? You must have given everything you had, but with a lot of character you kept coming back. Not to forget the hard work of your teammates. I don’t think you would have made it without them. They did their job well and you kept the yellow jersey. A difference of four seconds with Alberto Contador. Impressive. A dream come true. I wonder what else you have got in mind for this year? Please surprise us another time. Sir.
