Spektakel van Steenwijk 2013 / 27 July / Steenwijk

The 46th edition of the annual cycling criterium in Steenwijk took place on the 27th of July. Rui Costa (MOV) was the only foreign rider in the race this year. Costa won two stages in the Tour de France and became the winner of this year’s Tour de Suisse for the second year in a row. Laurens ten Dam (BEL), who became 13th in the Tour de France last week and was 8th in last year’s Vuelta a España, was also present. As always, he attends many of the cycling crits after the Tour de France by touring around The Netherlands in his Chevy ’89er.

Argos-Shimano, the team that won 4 stages with their topsprinter Marcel Kittel in the Tour, was present with three riders. Tom Veelers, Albert Timmer, and Koen de Kort with his new hairdo came to ride in Steenwijk. Lieuwe Westra (VCD) was there as well, along with his teammates Martijn Keizer and Danny van Poppel. Van Poppel was the youngest rider in the Tour and managed to become third in the first stage on Corsica. After two weeks, he decided to quit the race because of his age. Westra was able to reach Paris in the Tour de France, but unfortunately could not finish the race on the Champs-Élysées due to illness.

Besides the riders that were present in the Tour de France, such as Niki Terpstra (OPQ) and Tom Leezer (BEL), there were also other riders present. For example, Raymond Kreder (GRS), Bobbie Traksel (CSS) and Martijn Verschoor (TNN) participated in the criterium. There were also riders from De Rijke – Shanks, Koga Cycling Team, Metec Continental Cyclingteam, Croford Cycling Team, Team 3M and Cycling Team Jo Piels. The photo above includes Joey van Rhee (MET), Mats Boeve (RIJ) and Raymond Kreder (GRS).

Laurens ten Dam (BEL) became the winner at the end of the evening. He finished before Rui Costa (MOV) and Lieuwe Westra (VCD) became third. Albert Timmer (ARG) was the most combative rider in Steenwijk. For more info on cycling criteriums go here or go to
