Dutch Road Championships 2013 / 22 June / Elite Women
The Dutch Road Championship for women started at two o’clock in the afternoon in Kerkrade, just after the finish of the men under the age of 23. The startlist consisted of 133 riders and included riders from Rabobank – Liv Giant, Parkhotel Valkenburg Powered by Math Salden, Team Futurumshop.nl, Argos-Shimano, Boels Dolmans Cycling Team and the Sengers Ladies Cycling Team.
Of all the riders at the start, only 28 riders were able to reach the finish. The women had to face 114,4 kilometres, which meant that they had to ride the course 13 times. Amy Pieters (ARW), Vera Koedooder (SLT), Thalita de Jong (RLG) and Loes Gunnewijk (GEW) were always present at the front of the race. Also Sabrina Stultiens and Roxane Knetemann (RLG) finished in the top ten.
Marianne Vos (RLG) and Ellen van Dijk (SLU) were two of the strongest riders of the day. Unfortunately, Ellen van Dijk had a mechanical problem in the final part of the race and decided to quit the race because there was no chance for her anymore to end up on the podium. However, she did manage to secure the national time trial title earlier on in the week in Winsum. Loes Gunnewijk (GEW) and Annemiek van Vleuten (RLG) became second and third in the TT.
Lucinda Brand (RLG) attacked in the very beginning of the national road race and managed to stay away all by herself. Her solo ride was impressive and due to the efforts of her teammates from Rabobank – Liv Giant behind her, not one rider from another team was able to reach her. Consequently, Lucinda Brand became the new Dutch champion. Marianne Vos (RLG) became second and Annemiek van Vleuten (RLG) third. It is the first national title for the 24-year-old Lucinda Brand, who showed off the red-white-blue jersey at the Giro Rosa where she became 32nd in the general classification.
