Nacht van Hengelo 2013 / 31 May / Hengelo
The 38th edition of Hengelo’s annual cycling criterium took place on the last day of May. World Tour debutant Dirk Bellemakers (LTB) and time trial specialist Martijn Keizer (VCD) were both present. Both riders are known for their strong attacks and presence in head bunches. On top of that, a lot of talented riders are always invited to get the chance to ride among the professionals. For example, Dylan van Baarle from the Rabobank Development Team, who recently announced that he signed a contract with Garmin-Sharp for two years.
Also this year a lot of riders who were present in the Giro d’Italia were invited by the organisation. Among them were Wilco Kelderman (BLA), who became 17th, and Pieter Weening (OGE), who became 38th in this year’s Giro. Maurits Lammertink (VCD) was very close to winning a stage in the Giro and was also riding in Hengelo. Other riders were Maarten Tjallingii (BLA), Jens Mouris (OGE) and Thomas Dekker (GRS). Of course the locals Tom Veelers (ARG) and Albert Timmer (ARG) were there as well.
It is not often that the brothers Pieter and Andries Weening get to ride together in front of a public. However, this year Andries won the most combative rider classification in the Ronde van de Vijver. This result allowed him to start in the criterium along with his older brother. Pieter, who will not ride the Tour de France this year, also announced that he will not ride the Vuelta a España.
The winner of the Nacht van Hengelo 2013 was Tom Veelers (ARG). He managed to stay in front of Wilco Kelderman (BLA) in the sprint. The third place was for Maurits Lammertink (VCD). Because of this result, all three Dutch World Tour teams were represented on the podium. For more info on cycling criteriums go here or go to www.nachtvanhengelo.nl.
