Spektakel van Steenwijk 2012 / 28 July / Steenwijk
A lot of Dutch riders were present at this year’s Spektakel van Steenwijk. Johnny Hoogerland (VCD) was one of them. Some of the other Dutch riders present at the criterium were Laurens ten Dam (RAB), Bram Tankink (RAB), Albert Timmer (ARG) and Karsten Kroon (SAX).
This year the organization managed to get two-time Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Basso (LIQ) to Steenwijk. Before the race he asked a man in the public to get an energy drink from a local cafeteria, but left without getting one, because he needed to be present at the start for an interview. When he passed the cafeteria in the car, he saw the man with his energy drink along the road, yelled ‘stop, stop’ and got his energy drink after all. Kenny van Hummel (VCD), who was in the same car, laughed about it.
Karsten Kroon (SAX) tried to get away in one of the last rounds, but a small group, including Johnny Hoogerland (VCD), Albert Timmer (ARG) and Ivan Basso (LIQ), closed the gap. Johnny Hoogerland was the winner of the 45th edition of the Wielerspektakel van Steenwijk. He crossed the finish line before Ivan Basso (LIQ) and Albert Timmer (ARG).
Pieter Weening (OGE) was the most combative rider of the evening. He attacked several times and therefore won the ‘Le Petit Coureur’ prize. For more info on cycling criteriums go here or go to www.wielerspektakelsteenwijk.nl
