Tour de France 2012 / 2 July / Visé (Wezet) – Tournai (Doornik)
The second stage of the Tour de France 2012 started in Visé in Belgium. The stage was 207,5 kilometres long and finished in Tournai. Mark Cavendish (SKY) was the fastest in the peloton sprint at the end of the day.
Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) is this year’s Tour revelation. He won the 8th stage from Belfort to Porrentroy and is the number ten in the general classification. He was not the only French rider who was successful in this year’s La Grand Boucle; Thomas Voeckler won 2 stages and the polkadot jersey, Pierrick Fédrigo won a stage and Pierre Rolland won a stage as well.
In the photo above Wout Poels (VCD) was still looking forward to the mountain stages in the Tour of 2012. However, he got involved in a crash in the 6th stage to Metz and ended up in hospital with a ruptured kidney and spleen, a bruised long and three broken ribs. He was in intensive care for two weeks, but will soon be allowed to go home. From then on he will need a lot of rest to recover, but it is not likely that he will race again this season. We wish him all the best and hope that he will fully recover from these serious injuries.
Ryder Hesjedal (GRS) is the winner of this year’s Giro d’Italia. In the Tour de France he was not able to show his capabilities because he got involved in the same crash as Wout Poels and many other riders in the 6th stage to Metz. He had to leave the Tour early as well and is now focusing on the Olympics.
